Hardware
The following reusable hardware is needed in the production of sweet tea.

Pitchers
Two one gallon pitchers are required for each STPU. One additional pitcher is needed so the next batch can be produced before the last pitcher is consumed. Therefore, the minimum needed is three pitchers.

DW recommends the Rubbermaid one gallon translucent plastic pitcher. It is inexpensive (about three dollars), lightweight, and the desired capacity. Rubbermaid has recently changed the design (new on left) but either will work fine. Avoid the solid color models because you can't see how much sweet tea remains.

FILL LINE: Using a ruler and a Sharpie marker, make a fill line on each pitcher. Mark new style pitchers at 8 inches from the bottom. The new style top (on left in photo) has zigzag slots and an oval pour hole. Mark old style pitchers at 7.5 inches from the bottom. The old style top (on right in photo) has straight slots and a squared pour hole.

Wash pitchers in the dishwasher once or twice before first use to extract any solvent remaining from the manufacturing process.

Boiling pot
The boiling pot is used to extract the tea. DW recommends one gallon for each STPU. That is, a one gallon pot to make one STPU, a two gallon pot to make two STPUs, etc. If buying a boiling pot for this purpose, choose one large enough that the solution is two or more inches (5cm) below the top (prevents splashing), has easy to hold handles, and pours well.

Two large spoons
Only one spoon is needed to stir the tea solution. An additional spoon or fork is used to lightly squeeze the tea bag. A large metal slotted spoon, available in housewares departments, is very useful for handling the tea bag.

Sugar container
The sugar container must be able to hold at least five pounds of sugar. It must be fully resealable to keep out moisture and insects.

Measuring cup
A measuring cup is needed that is able to measure 3/4 of a cup of sugar. The 3/4 measuring cup on the left was purchased at Bed and Bath Beyond as part of a $20 set of three non-standard sizes. Walmart also sells a set of plastic measuring cups (under $4) that includes a 3/4 measuring cup.

Sharp knife
A sharp knife is needed to slice lemons.

Stapler
A stapler may be needed to repair defective tea bags.

Glasses
When at home, sweet tea should be served in glass, not disposable or plastic containers. DW recommends the Luminarc 20oz Nordic Mug (right) which never spills, is nearly indestructible, and has a good handle. The traditional tea glass (left) is attractive but spills just by looking at it.

Cooler
Sweet tea will keep for up to two days in an iced cooler, making it an excellent drink to take on auto trips. DW uses old half gallon milk containers so that the tea does not mix with the ice until the time of consumption. Use plastic wrap to hold sliced lemons.
